🏷️ Tags determine front-row placement: IEP and Vision/Hearing students auto-move to the front. Behavior tags place students where the teacher can monitor them. ELL students go near the front-centre. These tags also print as badges on your seating chart PNG.

Four steps · Make a classroom seating chart in about a minute

How to make a classroom seating chart

Step 1
Paste your class list

One name per line, typed or pasted from anywhere you keep it. Paste once and the seating chart, the roster and the student cards all fill in together.

Step 2
Pick your classroom layout

Rows at 5, 4, 6 or 3 across, pods of four or six, a U-shape, or pairs. Choose the one that matches your room before you start arranging.

Step 3
Drag students into place

Drop a student on an occupied seat and the two swap. Sort A–Z, hit Shuffle to randomise the room, or tag IEP and vision students to auto-place them at the front.

Step 4
Print the chart and roster

Print-ready PNG with your name and school on it, plus a numbered roster for the sub folder and the office. CSV too if you want the list digitally.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a free classroom seating chart maker?
Yes, completely. Paste your class list, pick one of eight classroom layouts, and drag students into place. There is no account, no trial and no watermark beyond a small "Powered by OneTap" line in the footer of what you download. It is built specifically for classrooms rather than being a wedding or banquet seating tool with a classroom template bolted on.
What classroom layouts can I choose from?
Eight: standard rows at 5, 4, 6 and 3 desks across, pods of four and pods of six for group work, a U-shape for discussion, and side-by-side pairs. You can switch layouts as often as you like without re-entering your class list. One thing to know: changing the layout re-places everyone automatically using their tags, so choose the layout that matches your room first, then do your manual drag-and-drop arrangement.
Can I make a seating chart without typing every name?
Yes. Paste the whole class list in one go, one name per line, straight from wherever you keep it. Everyone is placed automatically, then you rearrange only the students you care about. A–Z sorts the room alphabetically and Shuffle randomises every seat, which is the fastest way to break up a room that has settled into bad habits.
Can I print the seating chart, or is it screen only?
Print it. The download is a print-ready PNG with your teacher name and school on it, sized to read at arm's length on a desk or clipboard. Teachers commonly print one for the sub folder, one for the wall and one for the front desk.
Does it help with IEP, ELL and vision or hearing needs?
It does. Tag a student with IEP, vision or hearing needs and Auto-place moves them to the front row for you. ELL-tagged students are placed front-centre. Tags also print as small badges on the chart, so a substitute teacher can see at a glance who needs what without you writing a separate note.
Do I get a class roster as well as the chart?
Yes, from the same paste. You get a numbered class roster listing every student with their seat number and ID, downloadable as a PNG to print or a CSV to keep. It is the sheet the office and a substitute both ask for, and it means you are not maintaining a class list and a seating chart as two separate documents.
Is this tool completely free?
Yes: no account, no credit card, no email required. You get the full seating chart, class roster, and QR card sheet. Downloads include a "Powered by OneTap · onetapcheckin.com" footer, which is how we support the free tool.
What is OneTap and how does it connect to this tool?
OneTap is a digital attendance platform. When you're ready, students scan a card on arrival and attendance fills itself. OneTap has a forever free plan with up to 20 student profiles.
How does drag-and-drop work in the seating chart?
Drag any student to any seat. If the destination is occupied the two students swap automatically. Shuffle randomises all seats. A–Z sorts alphabetically. Auto-place moves IEP and vision students to the front row.
What are the student QR cards actually for?
Each student gets a card carrying their own QR code and roster ID. Print the sheet, cut the cards, and hand one to each student. In OneTap, students hold their card up to your phone and their name appears on screen instantly. No app download required for students.
Are the QR codes real and scannable?
Yes. Each card carries a standards-compliant QR code that any phone camera or QR reader will decode, and it encodes that student's roster ID (OT-001, OT-002, and so on). Scanning one on its own just shows you that ID — the codes become attendance check-ins once you create a free OneTap account and import your class list, which links each ID to a student profile.
Can I use this without ever signing up for OneTap?
Absolutely. The seating chart, roster, and QR cards are fully functional as standalone printable tools. OneTap is the natural next step when you want digital attendance — and your class list imports in one click.
What student information does this tool store?
Nothing. All processing happens in your browser. No student names, seat assignments, or any data are sent to or stored on any server. When you close the tab, everything is gone.
